Councillors for a two-seat ward have joined forces to hold a monthly surgery.

Conservative Coun Gordon Castle and Liberal Democrat Coun Heather Cairns, who both represent the Alnwick and Lesbury ward on Northumberland County Council, start the new venture on Monday.

They will hold a regular surgery at The Centre, on Fenkle Street, in Alnwick, on the first Monday of the month from 7pm to 8pm.

Coun Castle said: “I am very pleased that we have been able to organise regular joint surgeries for constituents in the greatly-expanded Alnwick ward where at least one, but normally both, county councillors will be present to deal with issues raised.

“I think that members of the public, whatever their party-political inclinations, will welcome this cooperative approach, which puts the interests of the community first.

“I have a good working relationship with Coun Cairns and we both seek to serve our constituents to the best of our ability.”

Coun Cairns added: “Since being elected, Gordon and I have worked closely together and he has been very helpful to me during this time, keeping me in touch with everything that is going on.

“We shall not always agree on issues, but it is in the interests of the people we are elected to serve that we both do our best for everyone.

“Please bring your ideas, issues or concerns to the surgery.”
