The council’s policy board has agreed to continue its funding for the bodies which manage the county’s areas of outstanding natural beauty (AONBs).

The current funding arrangements for the Northumberland Coast AONB staff unit and the North Pennines AONB staff unit are set to finish at the end of the current financial year.

Ongoing funding is available from Defra, but this is conditional on 25 per cent match-funding from local authorities.

Last week, members voted to maintain Northumberland County Council’s annual contribution of £33,700 plus recharges towards the Northumberland Coast AONB and £22,660 towards the North Pennines AONB for the next three years.

In the case of North Pennines, Northumberland is one of five councils with land within the AONB area.
