A councillor has hit out at a leisure company after an article in last week’s Gazette.
The paper reported how more than £100,000 had been spent on new sports equipment at the Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre in Alnwick, which is run by North Country Leisure (NCL).
But county Coun Steven Bridgett, who represents Coquetdale, has hit back at NCL.
Coun Bridgett told the Gazette he had been trying for several weeks to get them to fix basic maintenance issues at Coquetdale Swimming and Fitness centre at Rothbury.
He said: “Anytime we have heavy rainfall, the emergency exits attached to the gym begin leaking across the carpets and the only way to actually stop it is to open the doors.
“There are also significant problems with the roof leaking, which is now coming through the plaster and on one occasion a member of staff actually had to get on the roof to deal with the water problems.
“I find it a deeply bitter pill to swallow, that NCL have the tenacity to announce spending £100,000 on equipment so people can watch television or browse the internet while exercising and yet they are failing to deal with the most basic of maintenance issues in Rothbury.”
He added that he has contacted NCL’s chief executive but had no response.
