An electrical distribution company has apologised to residents and businesses in a north Northumberland town after a spate of power cuts in the last few weeks.
And Northern Powergrid has said that engineers carried out vital repairs to the Alnwick network overnight on Tuesday, which should bring an end to the recent problems.
It is sure to be a welcome relief to traders in the town who have been affected by the loss of electricity, which has come during tourist season.
Yesterday, two customer liaison officers visited impacted businesses to apologise and provide information.
The company has also offered to make a contribution of at least £1,000 to next year’s Alnwick International Music Festival as a goodwill gesture.
Explaining the reasons behind the problems, the company has said that on Tuesday, July 23, a fault occurred on some of the equipment in the Alnwick North substation. A generator was connected that day to restore power and minimise disruption for customers until the permanent repair could be carried out.
The spokeswoman added: “Unfortunately a problem with the fuel filters on the generator equipment developed at 9am on August 1 causing a further power cut. Engineers were quickly dispatched to carry out repairs and power was restored by 12.45pm that day.
“Due to severe rainfall and lightning storms, allocated engineering teams had to be diverted to complete emergency repairs to assets that presented clear safety issues.
“We apologise to residents and businesses who have had their power supplies affected during this time.
“Permanent repair work to the faulty equipment had been planned as a priority for Northern Powergrid to complete during August 3 to 5. This did commence, however further severe weather conditions at this time meant that engineering teams were again reallocated to emergency repairs.
“As of Tuesday, that was still the case and all of our jointing resource were assisting in restoring supplies to customers who were without power.”
The repair work at the Alnwick North substation that supplies Alnwick Garden, the high street and the immediate area was completed around 3.30am yesterday and the generator was disconnected.
Work will take place today to fill in the resulting holes. This will conclude Northern Powergrid’s work in the area.
