HIGH SCHOOL COLUMN: Macbeth from two different viewpoints
Macbeth – A teacher’s view:
Double, double, toil and trouble! Aye, ’twas Macbeth – the Scottish play – that drew us like Birnam Wood to advance upon Jesmond’s Peoples Theatre on a wild Friday night.
The party set out after a hard week at school and it was clear who the school week takes more out of .
The Year 8s were lively and expectant on the bus, while staff (well, one of them) were trying to catch up on some much-needed sleep.
We managed to secure front place at the door.
Our seats were grand and the excited noise prior to the show starting highlighted the whole experience was being enjoyed by all.
When the lights dimmed and characters began to walk down past our seats to enter the stage from among the audience, all watching fell silent, captivated by the bubbling cauldron and the cackling witches whom you would not want to get on the wrong side of!
Save for a few sweetie wrappers rustling (not mine, for once) which actually sounded like a sound effect anyway, our students behaved themselves superbly and their positive attitude and general demeanour had members of the public comment to staff that they thought our students were much older than they were, others noted that they hadn’t even realised there was a school party in the theatre, always a good sign.
Two and a half hours flew by and soon we were heading home, tired but glad of the experience and already looking forward to the next opportunity!

Macbeth – A student’s view:
Last Friday Year 8 pupils from JCSC went to see a production of Macbeth at the Peoples Theatre in Jesmond.
Once we had arrived and taken our seats, the theatre went dark, curtain up and then the witches came out from behind us and walked up to the stage where they began to chant around the cauldron. It was quite shocking.
The three witches were very important throughout the play and were part of almost every scene causing mischief and trouble amongst the other characters.
The actor who played Macbeth was really good and overall, so was the play.
The only downfall was a few sleeping Year 8s – it was late!
