Generosity of Rothbury folk in crisis
I WONDER if you would be able to publish a letter from ourselves to thank the people in Rothbury who helped us on Saturday, September 6, at the height of the flooding.
We were travelling from our home in Dunblane to Rothbury for a holiday in a rented apartment. After many failed attempts on flooded roads, we took two hours from Otterburn to reach the south side of the bridge in Rothbury only to find it closed to vehicles.
A local person called Ken knocked on our car window to ask where we were going. He immediately used the phone to arrange lifts for us and our luggage back down to the bridge and then from the other side up to the apartment. We could not believe how generously help was offered and given without us even asking! Peter and Yvonne Gale drove us to the apartment then contacted our other friends who were travelling down via Wooler.
Peter used a truck to collect them in Longframlington and drove them back through flooded roads to the apartment.
These local people made a huge effort to help us and demonstrated a very warm and generous welcome to Northumberland. We would just like to use your newspaper to record our gratitude and very sincere thanks to those who helped us.
