Enthusiastic youngsters entered Longframlington Show’s spring event, with a range of eye-catching exhibits.

The event was held on Saturday, May 21, and the children who took part were able to show off their creative and imaginative flair.

Until three years ago, this event was a sale of bedding plants and a coffee morning to raise funds for the main show in September.

However, in 2014, the committee took the decision to incorporate the junior show with the plant sale in the hope of encouraging more entries from children because the September date is very soon after the end of the long summer holiday.

Once again this year, a wide range of entries came from a good number of youngsters.

The spring event also included a fun dog show on the field next to the Memorial Hall where the indoor activities took place.

In 2015, an extension was added to include scarecrows, although this year’s take-up was disappointing. However, the show was still a success.

Veronica Thomson, show secretary, said: “Unfortunately, this year the uncertain weather seemed to have had an effect on numbers attending during the afternoon, and especially on entries for scarecrows. Only two businesses in the village displayed scarecrows outside their premises, and, sadly, there were no individual entries.”

Despite this, committee members had fun with the refurbishment of a scarecrow called Daffers; so called because of the daffodils on her hat and in her hand. This year, she reappeared as an artist and visited different parts of the village.

Reflecting on the highlights of the event, Veronica added: “The dog show was again popular and fun for those who took their pets along.

“Once again, invitations to enter the junior show had been sent to all children under high-school age in the village. Those who took part were very enthusiastic and most entered several classes in their age group. Winners were delighted with their achievements and their winnings.

“There were also many satisfied visitors, who were able to purchase good-quality bedding plants – sourced from Hobberlaw Plants of Alnwick – and home-made cakes.”
