Care home opens its doors to all its neighbours

A care home in Alnwick is opening its doors to the community to celebrate the best in caring for older people.

The event at Abbeyfield North Northumberland Extra Care Society’s Alnwick care home on South Road next Thursday will give people the chance to find out more about every aspect of being a part of the charity’s family, from living at the home to becoming a volunteer.

Volunteer and chairman of Abbeyfield North Northumberland Extra Care Society, Jim Thompson, said: “Our open day is all about celebrating our care home here in Alnwick and the wonderful people who live here, and we want local people to join us in that celebration.

“We’ll be able to answer any questions people might have about living with us here at Abbeyfield or becoming a volunteer.

“As a volunteer-led charity, being part of the local community is something that is central to us and our open day is a part of that. I think visitors will be surprised to see the mix of generations involved here and that’s one of the reasons that makes us different to a lot of other care providers.”

He added: “But I think what will really shine through for people who have never visited us before is the great atmosphere we enjoy and the sense of companionship we have here.”

The charity provides a homely, supportive and secure environment for older people who are struggling to live independently and cannot access the care they need in their own homes.

Visitors will get the chance to see some of the activities residents take part in, from tending the home’s award-winning garden to craft, bingo and the ground-breaking iPad Engage project that uses modern technology to get in touch with residents’ creative side.

The open day takes place between 10am and noon at Abbeyfield, South Road, Alnwick.
