The Lib Dem candidate in the Berwick constituency is calling for greater support for care services in rural areas so that those needing care and care workers both get a fair deal.

Following a visit to Bell View in Belford, which provides at home care services and is also a centre for community use, Julie Pörksen said: “There have been examples of care workers being poorly compensated for their work as travel time is rarely paid – in rural areas this approach would be very unfair. I was pleased meet the team at Bell View and hear of their work in delivering a quality care service and paying fairly.

“There needs to be a rethink about how at-home care is funded in rural areas – we need to make sure that care workers get a fair deal and their travel time can be paid by all providers and those needing care at home get a good service.”

Christine Harris, chairman of trustees, said: “With our Help at Home service, we provide personal care at home in the most rural areas in Northumberland. We also offer a range of additional support to older people including meals, transport and various opportunities for social interaction within their communities.

“Many local people are reliant on us to be able to stay in their own homes and communities and we are continually looking for additional support to maintain the level of quality service we provide.”
