North Northumberland residents are being urged to celebrate Independents’ Day and back local traders next Saturday.

Taking a cue from the United States’ Independence Day on July 4, the campaign calls on people to support their local shops

On Saturday, July 6, we want readers to make sure that they purchase at least something from an independent trader on the day.

Whether you live in Alnwick, Amble, Belford, Felton, Hadston, Rothbury, Seahouses, Wooler or any of the other villages in north Northumberland, all of us will have local traders, many of whom employ local people and sell local produce.

And the Gazette’s push to keep it local next week has been backed by north Northumberland MP Sir Alan Beith.

“Independents’ Day is a really good idea and I hope it will catch the attention of local people and tourists in the area,” he said. “Any initiative that will boost local businesses and support independent traders should be welcomed.

“I hope traders in Alnwick will see a big difference in the support they get from customers on Independents’ Day and I will be doing a bit of shopping myself in Amble when I am in the town for my surgery on July 6.”
