Alnwick Town Council is encouraging volunteers to sign up to a new scheme to support the upkeep of the town’s cemetery.

The authority is interested in setting up a Friends of Alnwick Cemetery group, comprising volunteers who wish to help maintain the cemetery.

Coun Ken Moore, chairman of the town council’s cemetery committee, said: “We wish to see if this idea has possibilities; there are always lots of small maintenance jobs that need attention and we are interested to hear from people who may wish to give up a couple of hours a week to give something back to their local community.”

At the meeting, Coun Moore told members: “The drive is appalling, the roundabout is appalling and I’m surprised we haven’t had comments from the funeral directors.”

He also said that discussions were ongoing with Northumberland County Council as to whether one of its small road sweepers could clear the drive.

Coun David Farrar added that one of the tasks for the volunteers may be tree-planing as a bid has been made for 400 trees from the Woodland Trust.
