The first solar and heatpump system in the UK to heat five different services has been installed right here in north Northumberland.

A system to heat a swimming pool, spa, domestic hot water, radiators and air heating has recently been installed at Breamish Valley Cottages in Branton.

Owners Peter and Michelle Moralee have searched for a viable solution to reduce their ever-increasing oil consumption in their pool complex for years.

When Shane McDonald, from Eglingham-based Calibrate Energy, showed them the Heatpump design and the payback they decided to install the sustainable technology in their pool complex.

It has multiple ways to utilise heat in the most efficient form, as well as utilising the Government tariffs to their full potential.

The current system derives two incomes and the next stage is to install photovoltaic cells to generate electricity to run the heatpumps, which will mean three income streams from the design.

After five years, Peter and Michelle will have paid off the system and will then be paid to heat their pool complex up to the 20 years of the scheme, completely offsetting their costs and allowing money to be spent on future renewables projects.

This system was installed and designed by Calibrate Energy, a company described as ‘the heatpump specialists’ owned by Shane and Susie McDonald. “Calibrate Energy is focused on designing heating systems that will not only save money, but will operate with the new Government incentives to make money for those who install them,” said Susie.

Shane added: “Although the technology is in it’s infancy in the UK, in my home country of New Zealand, 65 per cent of all homes and 85 per cent of all businesses have heatpumps, so I am accustomed to designing integrated systems that maximise cost savings.”
