A nursery which received an outstanding Ofsted grade last summer is expanding its offering.

Lisa Lowes, manager of Rainbow Day Nursery in Alnwick, is launching Rainbow@St Paul’s this September.

The playgroup, attached to St Paul’s First School in the town, will offer sessional care for children aged between two and four.

And it comes just a year after Lisa and her team, at their Northumberland Street base, were awarded the highest grade possible by Ofsted.

Lisa set up the nursery in 1992 with two members of staff and four children, in a prefab building in the town centre.

The business flourished, so much so that in 2002 they moved to their current base and now provide facilities for up to 60 nought to five-year-olds.

Lisa was approached by St Paul’s after it was felt that the school needed some early-years provision on site.

Lisa said: “We were interested in doing this and we are used to dealing with this age group, children from two to four years old.

“It will help feed into the school, giving children the continuity from when they start to going to the nursery and on to the first and the middle school.”

To start with, it will be open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, from 9am to 3pm. The playgroup will also provide wrap-around care for children attending St Paul’s nursery and will be run by the experienced and qualified staff from the team at Rainbow Day Nursery.

Lisa added: “We hope to increase sessions in the new year if the take-up proves successful and we aim to offer high-quality care for all children in the community.”

Eligible families will be able to receive 15 hours of nursery a week for free for children aged two.

Currently three children are registered to start, but they are also looking for new recruits.
