A couple who have built up a well-respected business in the motor industry are celebrating their re-tyre-ment and have wished the new owners every success .

Husband and wife team, Billy and Pat Swinney, stepped away from Alnwick Tyres on Monday, handing the keys over to brothers George and Dave Meakin.

The company was founded in 1988 by Billy and his good friend, Matty Holborn. Their aim was to provide competitive prices and all brands of tyres.

Sadly, Matty died in 1996, but Billy and Pat decided to continue the business and build on the success that had already been achieved.

Now, nearly two decades on from that, the pair have decided to call it a day.

Billy, 68, who has been in the tyre trade for 44 years having started in Berwick in 1970, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank people for the support that they have given Pat, I and Alnwick Tyres over the years.

“I hope you give George, Dave and the guys at Alnwick Tyres the support you gave Pat and I and I know they will help you stay safe on our roads.”

George and Dave have more than 20 years of experience as independent tyre retailers and know the tyre industry well.

They also own Border Tyres in both Berwick and Dunbar and the pair will run the Alnwick business with the existing fitters – Martin, Gav, Stevie and Marc.

Services on offer at the South Road-based business include mobile fitting, tyre repair, wheel alignment, batteries, brakes, exhausts and motorbike-tyre fitting.

Dave Meakin said: “It is all about continuity and for the foreseeable future it will be run exactly the same as it has been. It will just be different guys at the helm.

“We have known Billy for a lot of years and the business is very similar to Border Tyres.

“This gives us a bit of east-coast coverage.”
