A north Northumberland renewable-energy company has transferred its successful New Zealand business model to the UK.

Eglingham-based Calibrate Energy, founded by Shane and Susie McDonald, is believed to be the only business in the UK to specialise in heat-pump technology that can be managed and maintained off-site, which can save businesses up to 30 per cent on their overall maintenance costs.

Having sold a successful New Zealand business last year to return to the UK, the McDonalds were convinced they could replicate exactly the same business model from their offices in Northumberland.

And with a network of clients spanning the country, Calibrate Energy is doing exactly that with funding recently offered from angel investors to support the rapid growth of the special technology behind the business. It has led to an order book that if full until the end of the year.

One of these cutting-edge technologies is the remote monitoring system that Calibrate includes on all its installations and which can slash the cost of operational maintenance for any renewable heat-pump system installed.

Shane added: “At the moment, most, if not all, companies who install any type of heating system – be this a boiler or renewable energy solution – have to allocate a substantial budget for the maintenance of that system. In the case of companies who have multiple sites, this cost can be particularly high.

“What we provide is a complete remote monitoring system where we can identify and put something right, in many cases, before it’s even been spotted on site.”
