The Proof of the Pudding’s marmalade sponge pudding with orange liqueur was highly commended in the Best Sweet Bake category.

Shortlisted with nine other desserts, it was one of two in the category to receive the commendation from the judges. The winner was Bessie’s Tea Parlour’s allotment cake.

Susan Green, who runs the business, based at Heckley High House, near Alnwick, was delighted with the result – especially as this year’s competition attracted an ‘unprecedented number of great-quality entries’, according to organisers.

She said: “It is a really nice little accolade for the business and a pat on the back for my hard-working team.

“We were very pleased to be shortlisted and we are even more delighted by the fact that we achieved a little bit more and were one of two in the category to be highly commended.”

The pudding is steamed in the traditional way to develop the flavour and packed with homemade marmalade. The taste is intensified with a good hint of orange liqueur.

And it certainly tickled the tastebuds of the judging panel, with the experts describing it as a ‘deliciously light and zingy take on a British classic which was not, in any way, dense or stodgy’.

They added: ‘The pudding was steamed to perfection and the homemade marmalade and orange liqueur were perfectly balanced. The quality of the ingredients shone through and it was quite simply impossible not to have seconds.’

Last December, Susan appeared on BBC’s Countryfile festive special, showcasing her Alnwick Rum Christmas puddings. The exposure has resulted in increased product sales.
