A hairdresser who has opened up his first salon has been left speechless by the community response, which has ‘been better than his wildest dreams’.
Craig Forgie, from Amble, says St Martin’s Hairdressing in the town’s Queen Street has been inundated with customers since launching around six weeks ago.
The 35-year-old has described the salon, which also offers beauty treatments, as forward-thinking and says there is already a waiting list for cuts.
“The response has been really positive,” he said.
“I never imagined it being as good as it is at the moment. It has been better than my wildest dreams.”
Craig has been in the industry for nearly two decades and has worked in Newcastle and Gosforth.
A colour technician, he has also been used as part of the colour and show teams for the world-famous cosmetics and beauty company, L’Oréal.
However, St Martin’s – named after St Martin de Porres, patron saint of barbers – is his first solo venture.
“I just felt the time was right to do this and do things my own way,” he said.
“We are a forward-thinking salon. We do city-centre kind of work for town prices.”
The new unisex salon has boosted employment in the area, having taken on three members of staff.
It has also moved into a former empty building along Queen Street, bringing it back into use.
He said: “The premises had sat empty for around two years. We went in and have done a lot of work to the building.”
St Martin’s is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 6pm. It is open until 7pm on Thursdays.
