Wonderful customers, a great team of staff and a good reputation have led to an Alnwick beauty salon celebrating 40 years in business.

The Beauty Box, on Bondgate Within, has spent four decades providing a service to people across the region.

And owner Jane Atkin, who has worked for the business for 28 years, believes it is the customers that keeps it going.

The Beauty Box was first opened by Evelyn Ewart in 1974, in the alley next to Handi Stationery in the Market Place.

A couple of years after it opened, the business moved to its current home.

Jane started to work for Evelyn in 1987 as a fully qualified beauty therapist and when Evelyn retired, she bought the business.

“I didn’t change the format of it or anything, I just wanted to carry on on because it was what people knew,” Jane said.

“And people have continued to support us. It is our customers that make the business successful.

“We have got some people that come every week and some that come just once a year.

“They are all as important as each other.

“We even have the same men who come at Christmas time to buy gifts.

“We get to know the people that come in, some of them treat us like family.”

Jane also believes that her small, ‘but great’, team provides the best service which keeps customers returning.

“We are only as good as our last treatment,” Jane added.

“You can’t get complacent because it is so easy for people to go elsewhere now. The aim is to look after people and hopefully give them an excellent treatment each time they come in.

“I have a great team and I have great confidence in my staff.”

Jane is also proud of the apprenticeship scheme that The Beauty Box runs.

The first apprentice was Jane Murray, who went on to teach and gain awards from Guerlain for being one of their top sales team members.

“That gave me the encouragement to gain assessors’ awards and in the early 90s we gained centre approval, to train our own apprentices, from the Confederation of International Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology,” said Jane.

Since then, Jane has trained a number of apprentices, some of whom have stayed with the business and others that have gone on to set up by themselves.

She said The Beauty Box is the only beauty salon in Northumberland to stock Chanel fragrance and the shop has also been given a certificate from beauty brand Guinot for 40 years of using its products in treatments.

It has also secured a flagship account with popular brand Mavala.

“We just have a wonderful time here, it’s not really a job, we all really enjoy it,” Jane said.
