Would-be MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan has pledged to fight for a fairer deal on milk prices for local farmers.
She met local farmers at Acklington Mart last week to discuss prices and other concerns.
The Conservative parliamentary candidate for Berwick said: “It was encouraging to hear how sheep livestock prices are holding up for this time of year compared to last year.
“However, I am concerned about milk prices. Last year dairy farmers were receiving a profit of four pence per litre, over and above the cost of production, but currently they are losing three or four pence per litre.
“This situation is not sustainable and I am lobbying Defra and the Government to curb the excesses of the supermarkets and to get a much fairer deal for our hard-working local farmers.”
Anne-Marie will be holding a surgery at the mart in March, the first of a series of on-going surgeries, details of which will be announced shortly.
