Alnwick’s Lucy Bronze has returned from the Women’s World Cup with a spot of tea and a selfie with The Duke of Cambridge.

He met Bronze and other members of the England team during a breakfast reception at Kensington Palace yesterday morning.

The Lionesses finished the tournament, staged in Canada, as Europe’s top side after their 1-0 third-place play-off win over Germany in Edmonton at the weekend.

The 23-year-old scored two crucial goals in the knock-out stage, with a screamer against Norway in the last-16, before a header against hosts Canada in the quarter-final.

She is now in the running to win goal of the tournament, which will be decided by a public vote.

Other North East members of the squad included Steph Houghton, Jill Scott, Carly Telford and Jordan Nobbs.
