MP Sir Alan Beith has welcomed today’s announcement that the Coalition Government will invest to ‘identify and deliver solutions’ for the A1 north of Newcastle.
He is meeting Chief Secretary of the Treasury Danny Alexander MP later today to discuss the announcement in more detail.
The Liberal Democrat MP, who has been negotiating with Government Ministers for funding to improve the A1, said: “Ministers now clearly accept that A1 improvement is a priority for the next few years and I welcome the personal commitment Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander has made putting it high on the Coalition Government’s agenda.
“I will continue to press Ministers for progress as soon as possible within the limits posed by the need to get the economy back on track.
“I will be talking to Danny Alexander later today and I need to see the detail behind the announcement, to make sure I continue to speak to the people who will have the final say on when and how improvements are carried out.”
Sir Alan took the Minister to the A1 to see for himself how badly improvements are needed when the Chief Secretary to the Treasury visited Northumberland in January this year.
