President Lynne Angus was pleased to welcome a large gathering to Beadnell WI’s first meeting of 2014.
After thanking the darts team for the much appreciated Christmas party of last month, she invited members to help with preparing soups and sweets for February’s quiz night, to which we have invited guest teams from the Lindisfarne Group of WIs.
She also reminded us of the open domino drive to be held on March 14, at 11am, and the bridge drive on the afternoon of April 11.
Lynne then introduced Jen Hall of Berwick’s CAB, who spoke of the work of the North Northumberland Food Bank. She described the process of collection, sorting and distribution of gifted food in our area.
We were all affected to hear about the reasons behind the great need in our vicinity and expressed our determination to help.
Lynne is the nominated local champion for the scheme and spoke of the box which has been placed at the back of St Ebba’s Church for contributions. The social committee then introduced their new fridge calendar which runs up to May, covering walking, theatre, shopping, garden visiting and eating activities, hopefully, something there for everyone.
This evening was organised by members and although they had to rearrange things at the last minute, due to unforeseen circumstances, it was extremely successful.
Working in groups of five, we were given the task of decorating Victoria sponge cakes (baked by Jan Brunt), with the theme of an enchanted garden in mind.
Much fun and artistic endeavour was had by all and the cakes went to lucky recipients of raffle prizes.
There was also a cookery book bring-and-buy stall, where members were able to swap books and help swell WI coffers.
Two competitions took place centred on what to do with turkey left-overs, or describing a recipe that went wrong. Angela won the first one and Pat the second.
A great vote of thanks was given to Cath, Ciara and Jan for providing us with such an entertaining evening.
