Bamburgh WI, July meeting

Once again Bamburgh WI had to give a final farewell to a valued and long-standing WI member, Lilian Featherstone.

Lilian was the instigator of the Bamburgh WI poetry group which had past success in producing a selection of books over the years and a compilation of these books had been sold to the general public. One of Lilian’s poems was read to members as a fitting tribute to her.

As there is no monthly meeting in August, members were reminded that there is a village show meeting on the morning of July 29, followed by the lunch club meeting at the Northumberland Arms in Felton.

August 5 is the date of the sandcastle competition on Bamburgh beach.

This competition is open to all and proved to be very successful when held in 2012. Members offering to help in the pavilion were asked to provide cakes.

On August 13, Bamburgh and North Sunderland/Seahouses members plus friends will meet at Chillingham Park to view the Chillingham herd in the company of the warden. Members will make their own way to the park, meeting in the upper car park at 6.30pm.

Members were delighted to learn that their two community initiatives held in June, the village litter pick and organising the defibrillation demonstration, had been much appreciated both by residents and visitors.

The next community initiative is to distribute fliers to all second home and holiday let homes in the parish inviting folk who stay in Bamburgh to the WI meetings as the interesting speakers and workshops we regularly organise in the pavilion could entertain visitors who are only in the area for a limited time.

Preceding our visit to Chillingham, our speaker for the afternoon was Charles Deakin, an expert on the history and development of Chillingham park and the herd.

Charles really whetted our appetite for our outing in August as he described these wonderful animals and the amazing area of ancient woodland in which they have survived for hundreds of years.

Our next meeting on September 10, features a toe-tapping trio who will perform the musical dance act from the local WI panto and members will be encouraged to join in.

Bamburgh members are invited to bring along a friend who is not a WI member as this will be a fun afternoon.
