Councillors approved the application for the change of use of a disused shop in Belford to living accommodation.

The proposal was put forward by the owner as it has been closed for six years and there has been no interest in its sale. Parish councillor Geoff O’Connell spoke in objection to the plans.

But Coun Trevor Thorne said: “People aren’t shopping in small villages anymore.”

Coun John Woodman added: “I think it is a real shame to lose a shop front.”
