A crash in the dual-carriageway section of the A1 near Alnwick this afternoon will add to the current debate over the safety of the main road through Northumberland.

Police received a report of the two-vehicle crash in the south-bound lanes at West Cawledge Park at 3.08pm. The collision between a Saab and a Volvo was described as ‘minor’ and there were no serious injuries.

Two Northumbria Police patrol cars and fire crews attended the incident, although the road was not fully closed and traffic was allowed to pass. One lane of the two was closed for a short while to remove the vehicles.

A driver who passed the scene said the low sun might have been a factor in the accident.

It comes as the Chancellor George Osborne has revealed that dualling the A1 in Northumberland will be a ‘key priority’ for the Government in his Autumn Statement.

The road has alternate stretches of dual and single-carriageways and campaigners have long called for it to be dualled along its entire length to combat driver confusion, alongside the economic arguments.
