Talks are ongoing about the possibility of replacing bus services which have been axed from an Amble estate.
Arriva and Travelsure have announced that weekend services onto the Links Estate are not viable.
Coun Robert Arckless said he was ‘really disappointed’ by the decision and fears it is unlikely to be changed.
He told members on Thursday that Arriva had agreed to help explore community transport options, which would operate outside of normal commercial services.
He said: “This is probably the best option. This has been looked at by other town councils.”
But Coun Helen Lewis said: “I think we need to have a discussion about whether the town council would be prepared to make a commitment of subsidy, even on a limited basis.
“I am reluctant to go down the community transport link route without the figures. Unless there is a demonstration of the usage, I don’t think that we should go down that route yet.”
She suggested asking Tesco, which is due to build a store in the town, if it could provide a service.
“Maybe it could run a limited town bus service, maybe one an hour,” she added.
