Alternative vote bites the dust

VOTERS across Northumberland have signalled a resounding no to the proposed alternative vote, with more than two-thirds favouring first-past-the-post in the referendum.

Returning officers at the count, which began at the Concordia Leisure Centre in Cramlington at 4pm, had the massive task of sorting almost 100,000 ballot papers.

The final result was only 27,252 voting in favour of the alternative vote, with an overwhelming 72,500 against changing the existing electoral system.

The turn-out was 40 per cent.
