Traffic in Alnwick was getting back to normal this afternoon after lights were finally removed from one of the major routes into town.

Urgent work to repair a gas main has meant chaos over the last two months, with traffic lights causing long delays at peak times.

But today the lights were taken down and it appears the work has been finished.

Northern Gas Networks started work to upgrade the main along South Road in September and work began by the war memorial, moving out along South Road.

Three-way traffic lights at the war memorial saw traffic backing up to the Hotspur Tower, blocking junctions at Greenwell Road and Wagonway Road.
