The Bondgate Tower in Alnwick reopens after emergency gas repairs have kept it closed for more than a month.

The main route through Alnwick has reopened today after work to repair a gas leak has been completed.

Bondgate Tower, on what was the old A1, is now open to traffic into the town centre. It has been closed for more than a month to allow Northern Gas Networks to carry out ‘essential’ repairs beside the arch, with diversions and latterly three-way traffic lights in operation.

The tower was briefly open last weekend to accommodate the 5th Fusiliers’ march through Alnwick to celebrate being awarded new Colours.
