After a busy day selling raffle tickets at the Spring Council meeting, Alnwick Centre WI held their evening meeting in the Costello Centre.
Athol Swanston gave an excellent talk about the River Coquet. This was illustrated by lovely slides which showed the river from its boggy source on the Scottish border to its ending at Amble.
Members were shown photographs of moorland, old bridges, farms, beautiful wildflowers and village scenes. He talked about these giving historical facts and entertaining stories.
It was most interesting, a treat for members who knew the area and also for those who had not walked the remote Northumbrian hills.
After tea, Sylvia Taylor presided over the business part of the meeting. The Reading Aloud team have won a place in the finals of the competition which will be held at Stannington on Thursday. May 16.
Hazel Shell gave a report on the Spring Council meeting. A coffee morning is to be held on Saturday, May 18, in Alnwick Town Hall from 10am to noon.
The summer outing is to Carlisle with a visit to Houghton Hall.
The photographic competition was won by Hazel Shell and the birthday flowers by Joan Meuter and Audrey Appleby.
At next month’s meeting, on Thursday May 9, Julia Davidson will be our regional adviser at the AGM.
