Alnmouth WI, July meeting

Not such good a turnout of members as usual for the July meeting of Alnmouth WI, the holiday season must have started.

Our meeting started with Janis ringing the WI bell and the singing of Jerusalem.

As copies of the minutes were distributed among the members for their perusal, Janis welcomed all members and visitors and both she and Caroline quickly covered the agenda.

Thoughts and ideas were asked for our 100th anniversary, which will be celebrated in four years, Janis suggesting a sub-committee be formed to cover this.

She also mentioned a scarecrow competition at Heighley Gate in October plus a very nice invitation from Warkworth WI involving a guided tour of the village followed by afternoon tea in August.

Janis banged the big drum, asking for cakes etc. for our cake stall at the Hindmarsh Hall at The Friary on July 27, which is an event we all look forward to as it is in such a beautiful setting and of course very important.

She also gave an update on our outing to Raby Castle.

Once all the formalties had been sorted, our very patient speaker, Helene Dolder, was introduced by Janis, her subject being Ladies Who Laugh Stay Healthier, Live Longer and Have More Fun and what a good evening we had, as she was a very funny lady indeed.

She started with a brief cameo of her university life, plus working in five-star hotels such as The Grosvenor Hotel in London then Athens – among other places – which lead on to unconsciously entertaining, discovering this was her forte.

Her descriptions of her life were extremely funny and in her own words ‘the best comedy is scripted from real life’.

Part of her repertoire are various characters she has developed.

The one we met, after mysteriously disappearing behind the curtain and emerging, appropriately dressed, was Mo, a feisty Geordie charwoman who delights in a bit of gossip peppered with her very saucy wit; she certainly entertained us.

Sue Ellis gave the vote of thanks on our behalf for a very funny, delightful evening.

Scones were on the menu, which we all enjoyed with a cup of tea and the usual catch-up and of course a good rummage through our sales table.

There is no meeting in August, but our speaker for September is Sandra Dickinson and her subject will be Flowers From the Garden. Enjoy the summer.
