IT was a fight to the sudden death in this year’s Shrovetide football match between two ancient Alnwick parishes, as St Paul’s did battle with St Michael’s on the Pastures.

The traditional contest saw both teams – each with dozens of players – scrap it out for a single goal, hampered by high winds and mole hills across the furlong-length pitch.

In the end, St Paul’s managed to break the deadlock and win the game by scoring through the ivy-clad hale at the castle end of the field, followed by the traditional race across the River Aln to claim the match ball.
