WORK is set to begin this week to resurface the A1 in Northumberland.
The Highways Agency will be carrying out repairs to the southbound carriageway of the road between Newton on the Moor and Cawledge Burn until March 25 after previous roadworks and severe weather left it in a poor state.
During the work the road will be closed and junctions and central reservation gaps will be closed. There will be clearly signed diversions routes in place. A contraflow will be in operation on the northbound carriageway with a 50 mph speed limit.
The resurfacing and Shilbottle underpass work takes place between 7am and 7pm, however a number of night-time closures will be necessary on the A1 and A1068 below the underpass. Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place during the closures.
Highways Agency project manager, Shaun Cullumbine, said: “This work will increase road safety and provide an improved road surface. The structural repairs and resurfacing will minimise the need for future roadworks in the area.
“These works have proved challenging at times, due the severe weather in Northumberland before Christmas.
“We are working closely with the contractor to try to ensure any lost time is made up. The works are scheduled to be completed in June.”
