A joke, or just plain sexist?

England World Cup star Lucy Bronze has laughed off this cruel photo mock-up which appeared online following the recent release of football video game Fifa 16, which features female players for the first time.

The image depicts the defender, who appears in the game, doing the ironing, instead of playing football, while dressed in the national team’s kit.

After seeing the picture, the 23-year-old tweeted: ‘Bet this had some people creased. Sorry to disappoint whoever made it. I don’t actually own an iron #SorryNotSorry’.

The image has split opinion online, with some describing it as a joke, while others have jumped to Bronze’s defence and branded the picture sexist.

On the pitch, Bronze continued her fine form by scoring in Manchester City’s 6-1 victory over Bristol Academy in the FA Women’s Super League 1 on Sunday.

The win takes the title race to the final round of fixtures on Sunday. But with City in second place and two points behind leaders Chelsea, the fate of the league title is in the hands of the Londoners.
