SHOPS in Alnwick have been targeted by vandals.
Windows have been smashed in a number of outlets throughout the town, including the recently-closed Alnwick Tandoori, on Clayport Street.

Alnwick Inspector Sue Peart said: "We have had an increase in criminal damage. These incidents are drink-fuelled and down to mindless vandalism.

"But it doesn't look nice for our town and it doesn't give the right impression."

On top of this, cars have been subject to minor damage in both Alnwick and Amble. In some cases, wing mirrors have been kicked off and windows broken.

But Inspector Peart has vowed that patrols have been stepped up as part of the Christmas initiative – Operation Yuletide.

She said that police will be patrolling the area late at night, especially the routes people take when leaving the pubs in Alnwick and Amble.
