WOOLER waste centre will close its gates next month as part of a multi-million pound upgrade of recycling facilities throughout Northumberland.
The temporary closure of the site will start at 7.30pm on Friday, June 20. The site is due to reopen during the week starting August 4.
The new and improved centre will boast better recycling facilities and lighting, meaning the site can be open lo
nger during the winter months.
The refurbishment is part of a year-long £12 million investment in upgrading or replacing 11 of the 13 waste centres across the county and is part of an ambitious drive to ensure that just eight per cent of Northumberland's waste is sent to landfill by 2012.
The improvements to the sites, which are operated by SITA UK, are part of Northumberland County Council's 28-year Private Finance Initiative contract, which has secured £40.8m in government funding.
SITA UK staff will be handing out leaflets to everyone who visits the site from next week to warn them about the closure and posters will be put up at community venues in the area to help publicise it.
While the Wooler site is being refurbished, alternative recycling facilities for materials such as glass, paper and cans can be found at the bus station car park in the town or at the Red Lion pub in Milfield.
The nearest alternative waste centres are on Lionheart Enterprise Park in Alnwick and on North Road Industrial Estate in Berwick. Both these sites are open seven days a week between 8am and 7.30pm.
Residents needing bulky household waste collected should contact Berwick Borough Council on 01289 330044 to arrange for a special collection. There may be a charge for using this service.
Richard Hinchcliffe, general manager for SITA UK in Northumberland, said: "We know that some people will be inconvenienced by this temporary closure, but the end result will be an improved facility in Wooler that will help local residents continue to improve their recycling rates."
