DRINKERS are causing misery on an Amble street by urinating on front doors and pavements as they crawl from pub to pub, a police forum has heard.
Residents from North Street said they were often confronted by men who had stopped to spend a penny outside their homes, sometimes as early as 5pm.

One said: "The street becomes a toilet at weekends. It's even happening during the hours of daylight, when you go out to your bin."

Another said that urine had actually leaked into her home after someone answered nature's call against her front door.

Northumberland County Council currently sends a cleansing unit to hose down the street once a week, but locals say the situation is getting so bad that the police need to launch a clampdown.

Sgt Neville Wharrier said: "When we apprehend anyone urinating in the street, we deal with them robustly and they will appear in court."

Northumbria Police will ask the county council to consider installing extra lights on North Street, and mounting its own operation to catch offenders.
