ONE of the largest collections of items associated with the sporting, agricultural and artistic history of Northumberland ever to go under the hammer is to feature in a three-day Christmas sale next month
Everything from paintings to silver will be sold by Newcastle auctioneers Anderson & Garland and is expected to create keen interest among a wide range of collectors.
Senior partner Andrew McCoull said: "The paintings include a large watercolour of The Meet of the Percy Hounds at Lookout Farm, Alnwick, 1964, by famous Northumberland sporting artist Tom Carr, and an intriguing oil of a local hawking scene in the 17
th century by well-known Coquetdale artist Wilson Hepple, titled Hawking in the Reign of Charles II."
The silver in the sale includes a vase engraved 'Felton & Warkworth Agric. Socy. Presented by D. Deuchar For Best Coquet Lad'.
Among the books in the collection are Highways & Byways in Northumbria, 1928, by P Anderson Graham, and Peep into the North Country, also 1928, by D Lumley.
Andrew said: "Another publication of a quite different kind is a rare copy of The Northumberland Poll Book, containing a List of the Freeholders who voted at the Contested Elections for the County of Northumberland in the years 1747-8, 1774, and in February and March 1826 published by William Davison of Alnwick, and provides a fascinating snapshot of who owned what in the county in the years covered.
"The Northumberland 1826 election items in our September sale, reported in the Gazette on August 28, has led to the entry in our Christmas sale of a number of similar items – again a range of handbills and letters, including three from the Duke of Northumberland to the four candidates, and a rare 1826 election tankard identified by our firm's new porcelain and pottery specialist Steven Moore, from the BBC Antiques Roadshow, as one made by a North Shields pottery.
"Finally, there's a copy of the Newcastle Journal for October 6, 1838 listing the subscribers to a special fund to 'reward the meritorious conduct of DARLING and his DAUGHTER', in connection with the famous Forfarshire crew rescue by Grace Darling and her father a month earlier, on September 7, 1838."
The sale takes place from December 2 to 4. Viewing is on Thursday and Friday November 27 and 28 from 10am-4pm; Saturday, November 29 from 9.30am-12.30pm, and Monday, December 1 from 10am-2pm.
