Alnwick and Alnmouth have been hit by flash floods this afternoon (Saturday).
South Road, Alnwick, had to be closed by a fire crew from Berwick after a manwhole cover lifted and raw sewage flooded onto the road.

The Berwick firefighters had been drafted in to Alnwick as local crews were busy in other badly-hit parts of Northumberland as the relentless rain continued to wreak havoc.

A policemen at the scene said the emergency services had been completely stretched across the county with particularly bad flooding at Rothbury and Morpeth. He advised motorists not to venture out in the treacherous conditions.

The River Aln is also bursting its banks. An eyewitness travelling on Alnmouth Road, which connects Alnwick to Lesbury on route to Alnmouth, said that the river had flooded into neighbouring fields at 2pm today.

This is also the case at Alnmouth as the water levels rose.
