A £200,000 sewer upgrading scheme is set to start in Alnwick on Monday.
Northumbrian Water is carrying out essential improvements to the sewerage network in the Howling Lane area of the town.
The scheme starts on Monday, July 6, will take up to ten weeks to complete and will involve upgrading a combined sewer overflow.
Northumbrian Water's project manager, Danny Coyle, said: "Combined sewer overflows, which are consented by the Environment Agency, are designed to discharge diluted waste-water into watercourses in times of very heavy rainfall to protect properties and surrounding land from flooding.
"The work to upgrade the combined sewer overflow will involve fitting it with a filter screen and will result in improved water quality in the Wash Burn and the River Aln."
Temporary traffic management will be in place with a section of Howling Lane near the junction with Alwynside, closed for up to two weeks from the middle of July and again, for the same period of time, at the end of August.
Pedestrian access and access for residents' vehicles will be maintained at all times. Construction traffic will access the work site and site compound in land off Howling Lane.
