A NEW play park in Wooler should be built by the school summer holidays.
The parish council was told that the new equipment is about to be ordered and should be installed at the Scott's Park site by late July.

Gerald Connor, community safety officer for Berwick borough, and Jan Casson, of Surestart, are working to impr
ove play facilities across the borough and talked to the parish council last week.

The Wooler scheme has received almost £50,000 of funding from the Big Lottery Fund.

Mr Connor said: "We're looking to have it up and running by the school holidays."

The parish council was shown designs for the new play park which have had input from children at the town's first school.

Mrs Casson and Mr Connor said youngsters had added a roundabout to the plans but said that the existing paddling pool did not feature in the scheme.

Mr Connor said: "It would certainly never have water in it again but it is whether sand is an alternative."

Councillors questioned how a pool which had been used for decades was now not suitable due to health and safety issues.

Coun Kevan Curry said: "People just make these rules up and we sit back and take it."

About the whole scheme, Coun Rosanna Reed said: "It is going to be used."

Members hoped the new equipment will help the fight to reopen the toilets at the park.
