A PURSE was stolen from an elderly woman shopping in an Alnwick supermarket.
Police said the purse containing £85 was taken from the woman, in her late 70s, in Iceland at 12.15pm on Saturday.

Inspector Sue Peart said: "This is a despicable crime. We would urge people, particularly at this busy time, to be vigilant and try and keep their purse in a zipped compartment to be make it much more difficult to be taken."

The thief is described as a white woman, about 35 years old, 5ft 4in, of proportionate build with dark, straight greasy hair.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 03456 043 043 or email Insp Peart at sue.peart.7831@northumbria.pnn.police.uk

Devices, known as cat bells, for purses are available from the police to try and deter thieves.
