NURSES in Northumberland will join their counterparts from across the world to celebrate the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth on International Nurses Day on Monday.
This year's celebrations focus on the role of nurses in the community and primary health care.
In Northumberland, new leaflets have been published about the district nursing service and how the nurses are working to care for local people.
The 2
4-hour service is run by Northumberland Care Trust to provide skilled nursing care and advice mainly to people who are housebound but also to patients in health centres and residential homes.
The nurses look after patients who have chronic diseases, are terminally ill or have been discharged from hospital after an operation. They not only provide expert nursing care but also work with other local services to make sure patients have any social care or special equipment they might need.
The district nursing service also runs treatment rooms for people who can travel to their local health centre including clinics for ear care, continence and leg ulcers.
And the new role of community matron means that patients have one person who can act as a single point of contact for care, support and advice.
Copies of the leaflets are available from 01670 394400.
