PLANS for a new takeaway in Alnwick have been hit with objections from neighbouring householders and businesses.
The applicant, Amble gym boss Geoff Baston, wants to turn what used to be Kitson Windows, at Bondgate Without, into a hot food outlet.
In a design statement to Alnwick District Council, he says: "The aim is to supply a service which enables members
of the public to purchase foods such as pizza, chips, salad, health foods and chicken, along with soft drinks. The shop does not require any external change, the internal work will consist of shop fitting (counter) and include a work area, oven, grill, kebab machine, fryer, dough roller and other free-standing equipment. The biggest internal structure is the extractor fan and ventilation system."
But it is that which has sparked a series of objections from close neighbours.
One wrote: "I object to the proposed change of use on the grounds of loss of enjoyment of my property due to odour, noise and loss of privacy.
"I will have to suffer the nuisance of customers consuming their food directly outside my property. The location is totally inappropriate for the suggested business use."
Alnwick Town Council also stated: "We object. This is a residential area and the town is already oversubscribed with takeaways. Litter and parking would also be problems."
A further letter, from a local business, added: "Takeaways in general create noise, litter, violence and unsociable behaviour.
"A hot food takeaway would change the whole character of Bondgate Without for the worse.
"Taking into account all the above problems, this would be disastrous for all the residents living nearby."
But one supporter said: "At present there are a number of empty properties existing in Alnwick town centre and believe that we should be supporting and assisting young people who want to bring income and jobs to the area. The neighbours' objections primarily relate to the noise and potential damage that could be caused to their properties, but on their objections they also state that this is already occurring. I fail to see how this proposal would create any additional disturbance to that which already exists."
Alnwick District Council's development control committee will determine the application on Tuesday, August 26.
