NORTHUMBRIA University student John Cuthbert, from Amble, is preparing for his final year of a computer science degree, after completing a work experience placement.
John was able to secure a highly-coveted year at the engineering software firm Metrology Software Products (MSP) based in Alnwick.

John was working on MSP's NC-PartLocator software, which is used by engineering firms to set up machines tools to accurately machine complex three dimensional components.

Product manager Chris Hobson said:
"John's aptitude for software development saw him quickly progress from small product changes to the implementation of major features."

MSP supplies software to BAE Systems on the Eurofighter Typhoon project, where John was able to see the practical benefits of his work.

John so impressed MSP that company director Tony Brown offered him a permanent position, as a software engineer when he graduates next year.
