FIVE Independent councillors have formed their own group on Northumberland's new unitary authority, rather than align themselves with the three political parties.
Two of the seven Independents elected last Thursday have already allied with the Conservatives, to form a new group.

They are Coun Gordon Castle, for Alnwick, and Jeff Watson, Amble West with Warkworth.

But the remaining five - Longhoughton member John Taylor, Berwick North's Brian Douglas, Lynemouth's Milburn Irvine Douglas, Bywell member Paul Kelly and William Garrett, representing Prudhoe East - say they will go it alone.

Coun Taylor said: "We have decided to remain truly independent, and to form a group accordingly so that we can secure committee places.

"We will support whatever is in the best interests of our electoral divisions."
