A CHURCH will be celebrating its 150th birthday this weekend, with a special exhibition on the history of the church.
St John the Divine, which is at Red Row and covers the parish of Chevington, will play host to a full weekend of events, starting tomorrow with an open day for schools and the public between 10am and 3pm.
The church will also be open between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, while on Sunday, the Bishop of Newcastle will take the Holy Communion service at 10am.
And Evening Service of Praise follows at 6pm, when members of the local community and beyond, who have some link with the church through a marriage or baptism, are welcome to attend.
Rev Wendy Aird said: "We wanted to celebrate the fact that the church has been here for 150 years, and hope that it will continue to be for the people of the community.
"We have two banners on display for the occasion, including the diocese banner and the newly blessed church banner, which was made by Joan Murray and Peggy Fairbairn, who did a wonderful job. We look forward to seeing everyone there."
