HALF of all electric blankets tested in north Northumberland were unsafe.
Northumberland County Council provided funding for the scheme of free safety checks on electric blankets.
The checks proved to be very popular with pensioners. A specialist engineer who carried out the checks found that half of the 177 blankets checked were unsafe.
Blankets that were unfit to be used were replaced by Age Concern.
Aileen Alexander, deputy chief executive of Age Concern Northumberland, said: "We are pleased to have been involved in this valuable project for the fourth year running and to have been able to provide free replacement blankets where necessary.
"We hope to be able to provide further blankets to needy pensioners during the coming winter."
