SWEETS and chocolate – that's the secret to a long life says centenarian Catherine Ross.
Beaming with pride, great great grandma Catherine celebrated her 100th birthday with her close family on Friday, after receiving congratulations from the Queen and a mountain of cards and flowers.
And most of her presents were made out of chocolate – her key to a long life – including a chocolate champagne bottle from great grandson Anthony.
Catherine said: "I don't smoke, I don't take alcohol, I just have sweets and chocolate."
In her 100 years she has only spent one day in hospital and doesn't plan on returning yet. And she has lived through the reigns of four kings and one queen as well as 18 prime ministers.
Born on Coronation Street, Broomhill, Catherine left school in 1922 at the age of 14 to work in domestic service.
She worked until she was 25 when she married Cuthbert, who died in 1972 after 38 years of marriage.
Cuthbert spent 49 years working in the pit, while Catherine spent her life at home looking after her husband and their sons Brian, born in 1935 and Eric, born in 1937.
Catherine has had her share of heartache over the years.
She lost eldest son Brian in a car crash when he was 48 and Eric died in March this year, aged 70.
Catherine is a doting grandma to five grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great great grandson.
Eric's wife Jane said: "On behalf of myself and Eric we hope that you have a really good day. We both love you and always will."
Catherine was a member of Broomhill Bowling Club as well as a member of Christ Church, Broomhill, for 52 years.
She now spends her time reading and watching television, as well as visiting her family in Sheffield and Telford.
