ROTHBURY was at a standstill today after a fire tore through a hotel roof.
The blaze started at about 11am at the Newcastle Hotel, after a spark from a cooker set the extractor fan in the kitchen alight.

Fire crews from Rothbury, Alnwick and two from Morpeth were at the scene.

Onlookers saw smoke billowing across the village as the fire took hold and police closed the road outside the hotel for about an hour.

Staff at the hotel and the nearby Coquetdale Centre were evacuated as a precaution.
